July to December for peak whale watching, when southern right whales move inshore to breed and calve; the beaches are at their busiest over the December–January summer holidays.
Portuguese navigators called it Bahia Formosa — the beautiful bay — before the Cape's Dutch governor, Baron Joachim van Plettenberg, lent it his name in 1779. The label has held up. Cradled roughly midway along South Africa's Garden Route, Plettenberg Bay curves around a wide, mountain-backed bay on the warm Indian Ocean, its shoreline anchored at one end by the rocky finger of the Robberg Peninsula. The town sits within the Garden Route Biosphere Reserve, recognised by UNESCO in 2017, and looks out over waters flanked by two marine protected areas.
That sheltered, protected setting makes the bay one of the finest whale-watching grounds in the country. Southern right whales are a common sight from roughly July to December, when they move inshore to breed and calve, joined seasonally by humpback and Bryde's whales, orcas and several dolphin species. In May 2023 the World Cetacean Alliance accredited Plettenberg Bay as a Whale Heritage Site — the third in South Africa and, at the time, one of only seven fully accredited sites worldwide — a designation reserved for coastal communities that protect and celebrate cetaceans rather than simply market them.
On land the appeal is broad and easy. Six local beaches — among them Lookout, Robberg 5, Singing Kettle and the Nature's Valley strand — flew full Blue Flag status for the 2025/26 season, a certification demanding high standards of water quality, safety and management. Between swims, visitors walk the circular trail around Robberg Nature Reserve, paddle the Keurbooms estuary, or visit Birds of Eden, billed as the world's largest free-flight aviary. The bay's unofficial emblem, the fragile pansy shell, still washes up on its sands.
