Hermanus

Western Cape
  • Whale Heritage

Best time to visit

June to November, with stragglers into December, peaking around September–October

Perched on the cliffs of Walker Bay, Hermanus is one of the finest places on Earth to watch whales without ever setting foot on a boat. From roughly June to November, with stragglers into December, southern right whales gather close to shore to mate and calve.

The town even has a "whale crier" who signals sightings, and a clifftop path that follows the coastline from viewpoint to viewpoint.
