Clifton Beaches

Strung along Cape Town's Atlantic Seaboard beneath the slopes of Lion's Head, Clifton is not one beach but four — numbered First to Fourth from north to south and fenced off from one another by clusters of rounded granite corestone boulders. The sand is almost pure white quartzite, and the string of intimate, boulder-framed coves has made this one of the most fashionable and most photographed shorelines in the city.

The boulders do more than divide the beaches. Together with the bulk of Lion's Head rising to the east, they place Clifton in a wind shadow that keeps it calm while Cape Town's summer "south-easter" scours more exposed coastlines nearby. The trade-off is the water: this is the cold Atlantic, and swimming temperatures hover around 12–16°C even at the height of summer. Each cove keeps its own following — the northern beaches draw surfers, students and families, Third Beach has long been a favourite of Cape Town's LGBTQ community, and the broad Fourth Beach is the busiest, geared to sunbathers and served by lifeguards, toilets and changing facilities.

It is Fourth Beach that carries the credential: it holds Blue Flag status for the 2025/26 season (1 December 2025 to 28 February 2026), the international eco-label awarded locally through WESSA for water quality, safety and environmental management. The other three beaches share the same white sand and clear, cold water but are not individually Blue Flag-listed — a distinction worth noting for visitors who assume all of Clifton carries the flag.
